TSet within the rolling landscape of Glendevon, this project transforms and extends a dilapidated Category B listed barn into a contemporary family home, carefully balancing the character of the existing building with the needs of modern living.

The original stone steading formed part of a historic cluster of farm buildings but, in its existing form, was too small to create a practical family home. The challenge was therefore to find a way of extending the building without overwhelming its simple agricultural character or disrupting the wider rural setting.

Our approach was to retain and refurbish the existing stone building while introducing a new single-storey extension alongside it. Rather than trying to imitate the original architecture, the extension is deliberately contemporary, creating a clear distinction between old and new while remaining sympathetic in scale, form and material.

The layout was shaped by the site itself. The new living spaces open towards the south and east, making the most of natural light and the expansive views across the glen, while the more private accommodation remains closely connected to the original steading. The extension sits low within the landscape, allowing the traditional building to remain the dominant element when approaching the property.

A restrained palette of natural materials helps connect the new addition to its setting. Stone and slate are retained as important elements of the original building, while timber cladding gives the extension its own softer, contemporary identity.

The result is a home that feels rooted in its surroundings while offering the light, space and connection to the landscape expected of modern family life.

The project is a good example of how listed and traditional buildings can be adapted rather than simply preserved. By understanding what gives an existing building its character — and being confident about where contemporary architecture can add value — it is possible to create something that feels both respectful and genuinely new.
