This was a very special project to the Staran team for a number of reasons! As well as featuring in the Autumn 2021 series of Grand Designs, the building is the family home of Staran co-founder, Iain.

The existing, B-listed bothy required substantial restoration to bring it up to a liveable standard. As the bothy is connected to the existing walled garden, care had to be taken during the building process to ensure nothing was structurally undermined and as much character as possible was retained. Within the walled garden, a new, contemporary, single storey extension was constructed and clad in black timber.

Views and connections into the existing mature garden were really important to the owners. The end result are contrasting spaces with the contemporary extension housing large, light-filled living areas whilst the bothy contains smaller, cosier rooms that have retained the charm and magic that the 150 year old structure provides.
